Highest LED energy efficiency

The LED market is constantly developing and it can, therefore, be challenging to stay updated. In this blog we look at energy efficiency by comparing LED lighting to conventional lighting such as incandescent bulbs and fluorescent tubes.

The first visual LED was a red diode. It was invented in 1962 and became available on the market in 1978. In 1997 the blue LED came to the market and six years later most of the colours in the colour spectrum were obtainable with LED. Since then, the development has continued its rapid growth and with incandescent bulbs being phased out in great parts of the world, LED lighting has become an integrated part of the lighting industry.

Energy efficiency

One of the advantages associated with LED lighting in relation to other light sources such as incandescent bulbs and fluorescent tubes is that the light-emitting diodes are relatively more energy efficient. In order to measure energy efficiency, you look at two different factors. The first unit is lumen (lm), which indicates the amount of light emitted from the light source. The second unit is Watt (W), which shows the light source’s energy consumption. Combined, these units represent lumens per Watt (LPW), which reflects the amount of light created with the added power. Hereby, LPW makes it possible to see how energy efficient the given light source is.

The incandescent bulb was the least energy efficient and thus, the least sustainable lighting solution. Typically, incandescent bulbs emitted 10 LPW, whereas traditional fluorescent tubes emit around 80-100 LPW. But if you take LED lighting, on the contrary, the energy efficiency is considerably greater. Light-emitting diodes typically emit between 100 to 200 LPW, but the most energy efficient LED on the market emits 260 LPW at the time of writing. There is conducted research in energy efficiency to a great extent, wherefore even more energy efficient LED solutions are provided frequently. In 2016, researchers managed to obtain incredible 305 LPW in a laboratory. However, this solution has not reached the market yet.

At Normasym we monitor the development of the market closely. We believe, that the development will continue so that we, within a couple of years, will experience energy savings of 80-90%, if you compare LED lighting to fluorescent tubes.

When talking about energy efficiency, LED lighting is, accordingly, the best solution. Even though the LED lighting is more expensive than traditional light sources, the return on investment is typically less than a year. That means, that the money you have invested in the LED solution typically will be recouped within less than one year. But LED’s are not only an advantage to your wallet; they are also beneficial to the environment, seeing that they use less power to emit the same amount of light compared to traditional light sources.

Our most energy efficient products

Currently, our most energy efficient product is NS22, which is a retrofit LED tube emitting impressive 190 LPW. NS22 can be used as a replacement for common fluorescent tubes and can be installed in every place, where fluorescent tubes are already installed.

NS71 is another example of one of our particularly energy efficient solutions. NS71 is a LED spotlight, which is ideal for application in shops and supermarkets among others. The product is remarkable for emitting 142 LPW.

With 140 LPW NS57 is situated in the top end of the scale with reference to energy efficiency. NS57 is a linear LED luminaire, which is especially suitable for parking houses. In addition, the luminaire comes with a sensor. This sensor adjusts the light depending on the activity level, which just contributes to even higher energy savings.
